Fancy Goldfish
Carassius auratus (fancy varieties)
Family: Cyprinidae • Origin: East Asia
Fancy Goldfish (Orandas, Ryukins, Ranchus) are slower, rounder goldfish varieties. Need less space than common goldfish but still cold water only.
Is Fancy Goldfish Right for Your Tank?
Fancy Goldfish is an excellent choice for beginners — rated "beginner" difficulty (2/5). They're hardy, forgiving of minor water parameter fluctuations, and generally easy to feed. A 20-gallon tank minimum is standard — most community setups will accommodate them.
With a peaceful temperament, Fancy Goldfish makes a great community fish. They coexist well with other non-aggressive species of similar size. This is a schooling species — keep at least 2 together, or they may become stressed and display abnormal behavior. Expected lifespan: 10 years with proper care.
Common Mistakes with Fancy Goldfish
Keeping fewer than 2 together
Fancy Goldfish is a schooling species — they need a group of at least 2 to feel secure. Lone or paired individuals become stressed, hide constantly, and may develop health issues or aggression.
Putting them in a tank under 20 gallons
Many beginners underestimate tank size needs. Fancy Goldfish requires at least 20 gallons — ideally 40. Cramped tanks lead to stunted growth, aggression, and poor water quality.
Care Tips
- • Cold water only — no tropicals
- • Slower than common goldfish
- • Prone to swim bladder issues — soak food
- • 20 gal for first, +10 per additional
- • Do NOT mix with common/comet goldfish
Feeding: Sinking goldfish pellets, blanched peas, bloodworms. Avoid floating food (swim bladder issues).
Compatibility Notes: Cold water only. Cannot keep with common goldfish (they outcompete fancies). Cannot keep with tropicals.
